# CrewAI vs LangGraph

> Choose CrewAI when you want to stand up a team of role-based agents quickly, describing each agent's role, goal and tasks, with Flows for event-driven control. Choose LangGraph when you need explicit control over every step, durable execution, checkpointing and human-in-the-loop pauses for long-running production agents. Both are open source and work with many model providers.

| | CrewAI | LangGraph |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Core idea | Crews of agents with a role, goal and backstory, assigned tasks, plus Flows for orchestration | A graph of nodes and edges over shared state, mixing deterministic code and LLM steps |
| Level of abstraction | High; you describe who does what and CrewAI runs it | Low; you design the control flow yourself |
| Multi-agent coordination | Sequential or hierarchical processes with a manager agent, delegation built in | Any topology you can draw, such as supervisor, swarm or fixed pipeline |
| State and recovery | Flow state and optional agent memory | Checkpointing and persistence, so runs resume after failures or pauses |
| Human-in-the-loop | Supported through task and Flow design | First-class interrupts that pause a run and resume after review |
| Languages | Python | Python and JavaScript/TypeScript |
| Relationship to LangChain | Independent framework, not built on LangChain | Built by LangChain Inc; works with or without LangChain |
| Observability | Tracing in CrewAI AMP, plus integrations with third-party observability tools | LangSmith tracing and evaluation |
| Managed platform | CrewAI AMP for deploying, monitoring and scaling crews, with a no-code Crew Studio | LangSmith Deployment for long-running, stateful agents |
| Time to a working prototype | Hours | A day or more, with more code |

## Choose CrewAI if

- The problem maps naturally to a team of specialists, such as researcher, writer and reviewer
- You want a working multi-agent prototype this week
- Your team prefers describing roles and tasks over drawing state machines
- You may want non-developers to build or tweak crews in a no-code studio

## Choose LangGraph if

- The agent runs a business process where each step and branch must be explicit
- Runs are long, must survive failures and pick up where they left off
- Humans need to approve or edit the agent's work mid-run
- Your team works in TypeScript as well as Python
- You need detailed tracing and evaluation for an agent in production

## The short version

CrewAI and LangGraph solve the same problem from opposite ends. CrewAI asks you to describe a team: who each agent is, what it is trying to achieve, and what tasks it owns. LangGraph asks you to draw the process: which step runs next, what state it reads and writes, and where a human can step in.

CrewAI gets you to a working system faster. LangGraph gives you more control once that system has to run unattended for months.

## Where CrewAI wins

**Speed to a working crew.** Defining three agents with a role, goal and backstory, giving them tasks and choosing a sequential or hierarchical process takes very little code. For research, content and analysis pipelines, that is often enough.

**Readable design.** A crew definition reads like a job description. Business stakeholders can review it and suggest changes, which is harder with a graph of nodes and edges.

**Flows plus crews.** CrewAI's Flows add event-driven control, state, branching and loops around crews. You get deterministic structure where you need it and agent autonomy inside individual steps.

**Managed option.** CrewAI AMP deploys, monitors and scales crews, and Crew Studio lets less technical team members build them without code.

## Where LangGraph wins

**Explicit control.** Every node, edge and branch is visible in code. When a process must follow rules, such as never issuing a refund over a limit without approval, LangGraph makes that structure impossible to skip.

**Durable execution.** Checkpointing lets a run pause, survive a crash or deploy, and resume from the last completed step. That matters for agents that wait on humans or external systems for hours or days.

**Human-in-the-loop.** Interrupts can stop a run, show a reviewer the agent's proposed action and state, accept edits, and continue. That is a common requirement in finance, legal and support workflows.

**Ecosystem.** LangGraph runs in Python and TypeScript, pairs with LangSmith for tracing and evaluation, and can deploy on LangSmith Deployment for long-running, stateful agents.

## What we recommend

Prototype in CrewAI when you are still discovering how the work should be split between agents. Build in LangGraph when the process is well understood and has to run reliably with approvals and audit trails. Many teams prototype with one and rebuild critical paths in the other.

Before choosing either, confirm you need a coded framework at all. Many agents fit well in n8n, which [our n8n vs code agents comparison](/compare/n8n-ai-agents-vs-code-agents/) covers. For budgeting, see [the cost of a multi-agent system](/cost/cost-of-multi-agent-system/) and [the cost of a custom AI agent](/cost/cost-of-custom-ai-agent/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is CrewAI built on LangChain?

No. CrewAI is an independent Python framework. It can use tools from the LangChain ecosystem, but its core does not depend on LangChain. LangGraph is built by LangChain Inc and can be used with or without LangChain itself.

### Which is better for production?

For long-running or high-stakes agents, LangGraph's checkpointing, durable execution and interrupts give more control over failure and review. CrewAI is production-capable, especially when Flows drive the process and crews handle the steps that need autonomy. The deciding factor is usually how much explicit control the process needs.

### Can I use Claude or other non-OpenAI models?

Yes, with both. CrewAI and LangGraph support multiple model providers, including Anthropic's Claude models and OpenAI's GPT models. Many production systems mix models, for example a smaller model for routing and a stronger one for reasoning.

### Do I need a multi-agent framework at all?

Often not. Many business agents are one model with a handful of tools inside a loop. Start with a single agent and add more only when one agent's instructions become too long or tasks clearly need separate roles. Multi-agent systems cost more to run and debug.

### How much does a multi-agent system cost to build?

Lumeor's multi-agent and enterprise agent builds start at $50,000 and typically take 8–16 weeks, depending on integrations, evaluation and review workflows. A single custom agent is usually far less. See our cost pages for the full breakdown.
