# API (Application Programming Interface)

> An application programming interface (API) is a defined way for one piece of software to request data or actions from another. Most business software exposes a web API, usually REST or GraphQL, that lets other systems read records, create entries or trigger actions using authenticated requests. APIs are the foundation of integrations, workflow automations and AI agents that work across systems.

## Why it matters for your business

Whether a process can be automated often comes down to the APIs of the systems involved. A well-documented API with the right endpoints makes integration straightforward. A missing or restricted API forces workarounds such as screen automation, file exports or a partner program application, which add cost and time. Before committing to a project, check that each system's API exposes the data you need, which plan tier includes API access, what the rate limits are, and whether access requires vendor approval. Industry systems in healthcare, property management and payroll often restrict API access.

## Example

A medical practice wants new patient intake forms to flow into its EHR automatically. The forms tool has an open API, but the EHR only offers API access through a partner program that requires an application and approval. The project plan adds time for that approval and uses a staff-assisted import until access is granted.
