# AWS AI automation and integrations

> AWS is a good place to run AI automation when your data or apps already live there. Amazon Bedrock offers managed access to foundation models from several providers inside your AWS account, Textract reads documents, and n8n has built-in nodes for S3, Lambda, Textract, SES, SQS and a Bedrock chat model. Common builds are document extraction, RAG over files in S3, and alert summaries, all with least-privilege IAM and budget alarms.

- Category: Data & Cloud
- Vendor: https://aws.amazon.com/
- How to connect: Built-in n8n nodes (S3, Lambda, Textract, SES, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, Comprehend, Rekognition); n8n AWS Bedrock chat model node; AWS SDKs and APIs; EventBridge and S3 event notifications
- Authentication: IAM user access keys scoped to specific actions and resources for external tools, or IAM roles for workloads running inside AWS
- Notes: Create a separate IAM principal for each automation with only the actions it needs, such as reading one bucket and calling one model. Model availability in Bedrock differs by region. Most models are enabled on first use if the account has the required AWS Marketplace permissions, but Anthropic models need a one-time use case form first, so confirm access to the models you plan to use in your region.

## What you can automate with AWS

- **Document extraction pipeline.** Drop invoices, forms or bills of lading into S3, extract text and fields with Textract and a model, validate in code and send results onward. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-document-data-extraction/
- **Invoice processing from S3.** Read vendor invoices as they land in a bucket, extract and validate fields, and create bills in your accounting system. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-invoice-processing-with-ai/
- **RAG assistant over files in S3.** Index policies, contracts or manuals stored in S3 and answer questions with citations using a model through Bedrock. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/build-rag-knowledge-assistant/
- **Alert and log summaries.** Collect CloudWatch alarms and error logs, group duplicates, and post a plain-English digest with likely causes. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-log-and-alert-summaries/
- **Private data access for an LLM.** Expose narrow Lambda functions as tools an AI agent can call, so the model never gets broad AWS or database access. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/connect-llm-to-internal-data/
- **Voice and phone agents.** Connect a voice AI agent to your phone system and log calls and outcomes to your data stores in AWS. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-voice-agent-for-phone-support/

## What makes AWS easy or hard to automate

Everything in AWS has an API, and n8n ships nodes for the services automations use most: S3 for files, Lambda for custom code, Textract for documents, SES for email, SQS and SNS for queues and notifications, and DynamoDB for simple storage. Events are first-class. An object landing in a bucket or an EventBridge rule firing can start a workflow without polling.

The hard part is IAM. A correct policy grants exactly the actions an automation needs on exactly the resources it touches, and writing that takes care. The shortcut of an administrator access key is common and dangerous. Network placement matters too: databases in a private VPC are unreachable from a cloud automation tool unless you run the workflow inside AWS or set up a secure path.

## The AI layer

AWS offers managed AI services that slot into workflows:

- **Amazon Bedrock** provides foundation models from several providers through AWS, including Anthropic's Claude models and, as of 2026, OpenAI's GPT models, with knowledge bases and agent features for RAG and tool use.
- **Amazon Textract** extracts text, tables and form fields from scanned documents, which pairs well with an LLM that interprets the extracted text.
- **Amazon Comprehend and Rekognition** handle narrower tasks such as entity detection and image analysis.

For most small and mid-sized companies, the useful pattern is S3 as the document store, a model through Bedrock or a direct provider API for reasoning, and Lambda or n8n for the glue.

## Limits to plan around

- **Least-privilege IAM.** One principal per automation, scoped to specific buckets, functions and models. No root or admin keys in automation tools.
- **Region and model access.** Bedrock models vary by region. Third-party models need AWS Marketplace permissions on first use, and Anthropic models need a one-time use case form. Keep data and models in the same region where possible.
- **Service quotas.** Bedrock, Textract and Lambda have per-account quotas on requests and concurrency. Request increases before a large backfill.
- **Cost visibility.** Usage-based services add up quietly. Use budgets, tags and per-project accounts or credentials.
- **Data residency.** Know where documents are stored and processed if contracts or regulations require a specific region.

## How Lumeor typically connects it

For clients already on AWS, we often self-host n8n in their VPC, use S3 event notifications as triggers, call models through Bedrock or a direct provider API, and keep custom logic in Lambda. [Document extraction](/guides/ai-document-data-extraction/) and [RAG over S3](/guides/build-rag-knowledge-assistant/) are the most common first builds. Whether to self-host is covered in [n8n Cloud vs self-hosted](/compare/n8n-cloud-vs-self-hosted/). Clients on Microsoft should see our [Azure page](/tools/microsoft-azure/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Amazon Bedrock?

Amazon Bedrock is AWS's managed service for using foundation models from several providers, including Anthropic's Claude models, through AWS APIs and billing. Requests stay within AWS, which helps companies that want model usage under their existing AWS agreements, IAM controls and logging.

### Should I use Bedrock or call the model provider directly?

Use Bedrock if your data and security reviews already center on AWS and you want one bill and one set of controls. Call providers such as Anthropic or OpenAI directly if you want their newest features first or are not on AWS. The model quality is the same either way for the same model.

### Does n8n work with AWS?

Yes. n8n has built-in nodes for S3, Lambda, SES, SNS, SQS, DynamoDB, Textract, Comprehend and Rekognition, plus a Bedrock chat model node for AI agents. For other services, the HTTP Request node supports AWS signature authentication with the same credential.

### How do I stop an AI project from running up our AWS bill?

Set AWS Budgets alerts before you start, tag every resource by project, use separate IAM credentials per automation so usage is traceable, and set limits in code on document sizes and model calls. Review Bedrock and Textract usage weekly during the first month.

### Should we self-host n8n on AWS?

It is a good option if your data is already in AWS. Running n8n in your own VPC lets it reach private databases and buckets without exposing them, and you control logs and retention. You also take on updates and backups, which n8n Cloud handles for you.
