# BigQuery AI automation and integrations

> BigQuery is a natural home for AI reporting, especially for marketing data, since GA4 and Google Ads export to it directly. n8n has a built-in Google BigQuery node, and BigQuery itself offers Gemini-assisted SQL, in-database model functions and vector search. The best automations are plain-English questions over the warehouse, agency and ad reports with written commentary, and feedback classification, all with bytes-billed limits on every query.

- Category: Data & Cloud
- Vendor: https://cloud.google.com/bigquery
- How to connect: Built-in n8n Google BigQuery node; BigQuery API and client libraries; BigQuery ML and AI functions; GA4 and Google Ads exports
- Authentication: Google Cloud service account with BigQuery Data Viewer on specific datasets and BigQuery Job User on the project, or OAuth for user-level access
- Notes: On-demand queries are billed by bytes scanned, so a generated query against an unpartitioned table can be expensive. Set maximum bytes billed on every AI query, dry-run generated SQL to see its cost, and point the model at partitioned, clustered views.

## What you can automate with BigQuery

- **Plain-English questions over your data.** Let staff ask analytics questions and answer them with SQL generated against documented views, dry-run for cost before running. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-natural-language-sql-reporting/
- **Ad performance commentary.** Join Google Ads and Meta Ads data with GA4 conversions and write what changed in spend, cost per lead and conversion rate. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-ad-performance-reporting/
- **Agency client reports.** Produce a monthly report per client from BigQuery tables with a written summary an account manager approves. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-marketing-agency-client-reporting/
- **Weekly operations summary.** Run fixed queries on orders, tickets and pipeline every Monday and post a short narrative to the team. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-weekly-ops-reporting/
- **Feedback and review classification.** Tag reviews and survey comments by theme and sentiment with an in-database model function or an external model. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-customer-feedback-analysis/
- **Semantic search over stored text.** Store embeddings in BigQuery and use vector search to find similar tickets, products or documents for an assistant. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/build-rag-knowledge-assistant/

## What makes BigQuery easy or hard to automate

BigQuery is serverless, so there is no database server to reach through a firewall. Access is controlled with Google Cloud IAM, and a service account with read access to specific datasets is all an automation needs. n8n has a built-in BigQuery node, and the client libraries are solid in every language.

For marketing teams it is especially convenient. GA4 exports raw events to BigQuery, Google Ads has a data transfer, and many ETL tools land CRM and ad platform data there too. The data is often in one place already.

The hard part is cost discipline. On-demand pricing bills by bytes scanned, and a model that writes SELECT * against a multi-year event table will scan all of it. Raw GA4 export tables are also nested and hard for a model to query correctly without help.

## The AI layer

BigQuery offers AI features of its own, and external models fill the gaps:

- **Gemini in BigQuery** assists analysts in the console with writing, explaining and fixing SQL.
- **In-database AI functions** call Google's models from SQL to generate text, classify rows or create embeddings, and vector search finds similar rows by meaning.
- **External agents** built in n8n or code use Claude or OpenAI's GPT models to answer questions for non-analysts, run SQL through the API and explain results.
- **Commentary** on scheduled reports, where numbers are calculated in SQL and the model writes the narrative.

For non-technical users, a curated layer of flat, well-named views does more for answer quality than any model choice.

## Limits to plan around

- **Bytes billed.** Set a maximum per query, and dry-run before running generated SQL.
- **Nested data.** Flatten GA4 and other nested exports into views before asking a model to query them.
- **Quotas.** BigQuery has per-project limits on concurrent queries and API requests. Batch scheduled reports rather than running hundreds of tiny queries.
- **Data freshness.** Exports and transfers land on their own schedules. Check that yesterday's data has arrived before generating a daily report.
- **Location.** Datasets live in a region, and joins across regions fail. Keep related data in the same location.

## How Lumeor typically connects it

We create a service account with read access to a reporting dataset, build flat views over raw exports, and connect n8n with the BigQuery node. Common first projects are [ad performance reporting](/guides/ai-ad-performance-reporting/) and [natural-language reporting](/guides/ai-natural-language-sql-reporting/). Dashboards often stay in [Looker Studio](/tools/looker-studio/) (renamed Data Studio in 2026), with AI commentary written into a table the dashboard displays. Teams sending GA4 data in should also read our [Google Analytics 4 page](/tools/google-analytics-4/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I ask BigQuery questions in plain English?

Yes, two ways. Gemini in BigQuery helps analysts write and explain SQL inside the console. For people who never open the console, we build a workflow where a model writes SQL against documented views, BigQuery dry-runs it for cost, and the answer comes back in Slack or a web page with the query attached.

### How do I keep AI-generated queries from costing too much?

Set maximum bytes billed on every job so an expensive query fails instead of running, dry-run generated SQL first, and query partitioned views filtered by date. A dedicated project or reservation for AI workloads makes spend easy to see.

### Does n8n work with BigQuery?

Yes. n8n has a built-in Google BigQuery node that can run queries and insert rows, authenticated with a service account or OAuth. Use a service account for scheduled workflows so they do not depend on one person's login.

### Can BigQuery be used for RAG?

It can. BigQuery supports storing embeddings, generating them with model functions, and vector search with vector indexes. It suits search over data that already lives in BigQuery. For a document assistant with low-latency chat, a dedicated vector store or pgvector is usually more responsive.
