## What makes monday.com easy (and fiddly) to automate

monday.com exposes boards, groups, items, subitems, columns, updates and users through one GraphQL endpoint. That makes reads efficient: one query can fetch items with exactly the columns a workflow needs. n8n, Zapier and Make all have monday.com integrations, and webhooks can fire on item creation, column changes and status changes.

The fiddly part is column values. Each column type has its own JSON format, values travel as JSON strings, and labels can differ between boards. Workflows need a schema lookup step per board and careful mapping. Large boards also require cursor-based pagination through items pages instead of a single query.

## The AI layer

monday.com is often the shared view of work for operations and client teams. AI helps get work in and get summaries out:

- **Summaries.** Writing weekly updates from board data for managers and clients, as in [client reporting for marketing agencies](/guides/ai-marketing-agency-client-reporting/).
- **Enrichment.** Filling category, priority or sentiment columns from item text.

Keep the model out of column formatting. It returns plain values; code converts them to monday.com's column JSON.

## Limits to plan around

- **Complexity budget.** Personal tokens share 10,000,000 complexity points per minute across reads and writes on paid accounts (1,000,000 on free and trial accounts). App tokens have separate read and write budgets. A single query cannot exceed 5,000,000 points.
- **Daily call limits** by plan, plus per-minute and concurrency limits that are lower on non-Pro plans.
- **API versions.** monday.com releases API versions on a schedule. Pin a version and test before upgrading.
- **Webhook challenge.** New webhooks send a challenge that your endpoint must echo back.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the monday.com API REST or GraphQL?

GraphQL. You send queries and mutations to a single endpoint and request only the fields you need. Each query has a complexity cost, and that cost, not just the number of calls, is what the rate limit measures.

### How many API calls can I make to monday.com per day?

monday.com sets a daily call limit by plan, currently 1,000 calls on Free, Basic and Standard, 10,000 on Pro and 25,000 on Enterprise, reset at midnight UTC. Check current limits, and design high-volume workflows to batch reads into fewer queries.

### Why does updating a column fail with a valid value?

Column values are sent as a JSON string whose shape depends on the column type. A status column expects a label or index, a date column a date object, a people column a list of person IDs. Look up the column type and use the format monday.com documents for it.

### Do I need a custom build if monday.com has its own AI and automations?

Not always. Built-in automations and AI blocks cover in-board actions well. A custom workflow is worth it when inputs come from outside monday.com, when you need several systems in one flow, or when you need a specific model and strict validation.
