# Semrush AI automation and integrations

> Semrush can be automated through its Standard API, but API access requires a Business subscription and API units bought separately, and each row returned costs units. There is no built-in n8n node, so most workflows call the API with an HTTP Request node. The best AI uses are content briefs, competitor monitoring, keyword clustering and rank change commentary in client reports.

- Category: Marketing
- Vendor: https://www.semrush.com/
- How to connect: Semrush Standard API (REST); Projects API; n8n HTTP Request node; Scheduled exports
- Authentication: API key from a Semrush account on the Business plan, passed as a query parameter
- Notes: Every request spends API units based on the report type and the number of rows returned. Set a row limit on every call and cache results, because rerunning the same keyword or domain report spends units again.

## What you can automate with Semrush

- **AI content briefs from keyword data.** Pull related keywords, questions and top-ranking URLs for a target term and generate an outline, search intent notes and an internal link plan. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-seo-content-briefs/
- **Competitor monitoring.** Track competitors' new ranking keywords and traffic estimates each week and summarize the meaningful changes. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-competitor-monitoring/
- **Client SEO reporting.** Combine Position Tracking results with GA4 conversions and write a short monthly narrative per client. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-marketing-agency-client-reporting/
- **Keyword clustering.** Group a few thousand exported keywords into topics by intent and meaning so each cluster maps to one page.
- **Content refresh queue.** Flag pages that dropped out of the top positions and draft a refresh plan based on what now outranks them.
- **Repurpose research into content.** Turn keyword research and an approved brief into a draft article, then into social posts and a newsletter section. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-content-repurposing-pipeline/

## What makes Semrush easy or hard to automate

The Semrush Standard API is plain HTTP GET with an API key, which makes the first call easy from n8n, a script or a spreadsheet. Domain, keyword, backlink and traffic reports are all available, and the Projects API exposes Position Tracking and Site Audit results for projects you already set up in the Semrush interface.

Three things make it harder than it looks. Access is gated to the Business plan. Every row costs API units, so a careless loop can burn a month of units in an afternoon. And most v3 report endpoints return semicolon-delimited text rather than JSON, so every workflow needs a parsing step before the data is usable.

## The AI layer

Semrush already tells you what ranks and who competes with you. AI adds judgment on top of that data:

- **Grouping.** Clustering large keyword exports by intent so you plan pages, not keywords.
- **Briefing.** Turning keywords, questions and competitor headings into an outline a writer can use. Our [SEO content brief guide](/guides/ai-seo-content-briefs/) walks through that flow.
- **Explaining change.** Writing a short, specific note when rankings or a competitor's visibility move, instead of sending a chart nobody reads.

Keep the numbers in code. Search volume, positions and traffic estimates come straight from the API; the model groups, ranks and explains.

## Limits to plan around

- **Plan and units.** API access needs a Business subscription and separately purchased units. Budget units per workflow before you build.
- **Row-based billing.** Cost scales with rows returned. Use `display_limit` and filters on every call.
- **Request rate.** Large batch jobs should be throttled and retried on errors rather than fired in parallel, since every retry of a full report spends units again.
- **Estimates, not analytics.** Traffic figures are modeled estimates. Use [Google Analytics 4](/tools/google-analytics-4/) or Search Console for your own site's actual traffic, and present Semrush numbers as directional.
- **Response format.** Parse the delimited text into rows and check column order against the export columns you requested.

## How Lumeor typically connects it

We run n8n with an HTTP Request node per Semrush report, a code step that parses and caches results in Google Sheets or Postgres, and a model step for clustering, briefs or commentary. Reports run on a weekly schedule by default. For agencies, we pair Semrush with GA4 data so client reports show both visibility and results. If you only need a monthly ranking snapshot, Semrush's own scheduled PDF reports may be enough and no build is needed. When you want more, [competitor monitoring](/guides/automate-competitor-monitoring/) is usually the first workflow worth automating.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Semrush plan includes API access?

Semrush documents Standard API access for Business subscribers, and API units are purchased on top of the subscription. A Pro or Guru plan alone does not give you the Standard API. Check Semrush's current pricing for unit costs, because they vary by report type.

### Does n8n or Zapier have a Semrush integration?

n8n does not ship a built-in Semrush node, so we call the API with the HTTP Request node and the API key stored as a credential. That works well because the API is simple GET requests. Check Zapier's and Make's directories for current Semrush coverage before assuming a no-code connector exists.

### How do I keep Semrush API costs under control?

Limit rows on every request, ask only for the columns you need, cache results in a sheet or database, and run reports weekly instead of daily unless something truly changes daily. A workflow that pulls 1,000 rows for 20 domains every day spends units on 20,000 rows a day.

### Can AI write SEO content directly from Semrush data?

It can draft it, and the brief is where AI adds the most. A model is good at turning keyword lists and competitor headings into a clear outline. A person with subject knowledge should still write or heavily edit the final piece, because search engines and readers reward first-hand detail a model does not have.
