# Shopify AI automation and integrations

> Shopify is one of the easiest ecommerce platforms to automate. It has a GraphQL Admin API, reliable webhooks, Shopify Flow, and built-in integrations in n8n, Zapier and Make. The highest-value AI automations are order exception handling, product description generation, support agents that can look up orders, returns triage and inventory reorder alerts.

- Category: Ecommerce
- Vendor: https://www.shopify.com/
- How to connect: GraphQL Admin API; Webhooks; Built-in n8n Shopify node and trigger; Zapier and Make apps; Shopify Flow
- Authentication: An app created in Shopify's Dev Dashboard (or an existing legacy custom app) with scoped access tokens, or OAuth for apps installed on many stores
- Notes: Since January 1, 2026, new custom apps are created in the Dev Dashboard rather than the Shopify admin, and existing legacy custom apps keep working. Shopify treats the REST Admin API as legacy, so new builds should use GraphQL.

## What you can automate with Shopify

- **Order exception handling.** Catch orders with address problems, fraud signals, stock conflicts or unusual notes and route them to the right person with a suggested fix. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-shopify-order-exceptions/
- **Product descriptions at scale.** Generate descriptions, titles and SEO fields from supplier data and photos, in your brand voice, staged for review. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-ecommerce-product-descriptions/
- **Support agent with order lookup.** Answer "where is my order" and policy questions in chat or email using live order, fulfillment and tracking data. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/build-ai-customer-support-agent/
- **Returns and refund triage.** Read return requests, check them against your policy and order history, and prepare the return or refund for one-click approval. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-refund-and-return-requests/
- **Inventory reorder alerts.** Forecast sell-through from recent sales and alert purchasing before a best seller runs out. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-inventory-reorder-alerts/
- **Shipment tracking updates.** Watch fulfillments and carrier events and send proactive, plain-language updates when a package is delayed. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/ai-shipment-tracking-updates/
- **Review response drafting.** Draft replies to product reviews that address the specific complaint or praise, for a person to approve. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-review-responses/
- **Sales into accounting.** Post daily sales, fees and refunds to QuickBooks Online or Xero as summarized journal entries. Guide: https://www.lumeor.studio/guides/automate-quickbooks-data-entry/

## What makes Shopify easy to automate

Shopify exposes nearly everything through the GraphQL Admin API: orders, products, variants, inventory, customers, fulfillments, discounts and metafields. Webhooks cover the events you care about, such as order creation, fulfillment updates, refunds and inventory changes, and can be delivered to an HTTPS endpoint or a cloud event bus. n8n, Zapier and Make all have Shopify integrations, and Shopify Flow handles simple in-store rules without any external tool.

Metafields and metaobjects also make Shopify a good home for AI-generated data. A model's suggested category, risk note or enriched attribute can live on the product or order itself.

## The AI layer

Shopify runs the store. AI handles the work around orders and products that still needs judgment:

- **Reading messy input.** Supplier spreadsheets, customer emails, order notes and return reasons.
- **Making first-pass decisions.** Is this order risky? Does this return meet policy? Which warehouse should fulfill it?
- **Writing.** Product descriptions, support replies and delay notifications, in your voice.

We keep money and inventory decisions behind code checks and approvals. The model suggests, code validates, and a person signs off where the cost of a mistake is real. Our [Shopify order exceptions guide](/guides/automate-shopify-order-exceptions/) shows the pattern on the most common workflow.

## Limits to plan around

- **Rate limits.** The GraphQL Admin API uses a calculated query cost bucket. Shopify Plus stores get higher limits. Bulk operations are the right tool for large exports.
- **App setup changes.** New custom apps come from the Dev Dashboard, with tokens that must be refreshed. Budget for token handling rather than pasting a permanent token into a workflow.
- **REST is legacy.** Built-in no-code nodes may still use REST. Fine for basics, but new features arrive in GraphQL first.
- **Webhook reliability.** Webhooks can arrive more than once or out of order. Make handlers idempotent and run a periodic reconciliation.
- **Protected customer data.** Access to customer names, addresses and emails requires the right scopes and Shopify's data protection requirements. Request only what the workflow needs.

## How Lumeor typically connects it

For most stores we run n8n with the Shopify Trigger for webhooks, GraphQL calls through the HTTP Request node, an LLM step, and Slack for approvals and exceptions. For customer-facing agents we build a small service that queries Shopify on demand and logs every action. See our [Shopify AI copilot case study](/case-studies/shopify-ai-copilot) for one example, and the [AI customer support agent guide](/guides/build-ai-customer-support-agent/) for how order lookup fits into a support agent.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Shopify already include AI?

Yes. Shopify includes Sidekick, an AI assistant for merchants, plus AI text generation in the admin. They are useful for one-off tasks. Custom automation is worth building when you need AI that acts on your own rules across systems, such as your helpdesk, warehouse, accounting software or supplier data.

### Should I use Shopify Flow or n8n?

Use Shopify Flow for logic that lives entirely inside Shopify, such as tagging orders or hiding out-of-stock products. Use n8n, Zapier or Make when the workflow touches other systems, needs an LLM step, or needs logging and error handling beyond what Flow offers. Many stores use both.

### Does n8n work with Shopify?

Yes. n8n has a built-in Shopify node for orders and products and a Shopify Trigger node for webhooks. The built-in node uses the REST Admin API, so for newer GraphQL-only features we call the GraphQL Admin API with the HTTP Request node.

### Can an AI agent issue refunds in Shopify?

Technically yes, but we do not recommend letting it do so unattended at first. The agent prepares the refund with the reason and policy check, and a person approves it in one click. Once the approval rate is consistently high for a clear category, you can let that category run automatically with limits.

### Has Lumeor built on Shopify before?

Yes. Our Shopify AI copilot case study describes an AI assistant built around a Shopify store's data. Every store is different, so we start with the store's actual order, product and support data before recommending what to build.
