The short version
UiPath started as a robotic process automation platform and has grown into an enterprise automation suite that now orchestrates AI agents alongside its robots. n8n is a workflow engine built around APIs, with strong AI agent tooling and the option to self-host.
The deciding question is simple: do your important processes run through APIs, or through screens? If screens, UiPath has capabilities n8n does not. If APIs, n8n is usually faster to build with and cheaper to run.
Where UiPath wins
Screen-level automation. UiPath robots can operate Windows desktop applications, browsers, terminal emulators and virtual desktops. For an ERP or line-of-business system without an API, that may be the only way to automate without replacing the system.
Enterprise governance. Orchestrator, credential vaults, role-based access, queues and audit logs are mature and familiar to enterprise IT. For a company with dozens of bots and strict change control, that structure is valuable.
Breadth in one vendor. Document understanding, test automation, process monitoring, attended robots and agent orchestration sit in one platform with one support contract.
On-premises option. Automation Suite lets regulated organizations run the platform inside their own environment. Check which agent features your version supports before planning around them.
Where n8n wins
API workflows and AI agents. Connecting CRMs, accounting tools, databases and messaging apps is what n8n does best. Its AI Agent node lets you give a model tools, memory and a choice of providers, and you can inspect every step when debugging.
Cost. UiPath is licensed per user and per robot, with larger plans sold through sales and some features metered. n8n Cloud bills per execution, and the self-hosted community edition removes execution fees entirely. For mid-sized companies the gap in total cost is often large.
Speed. A technical operator can stand up n8n in Docker and have a working workflow the same day. There is no platform rollout before the first useful automation.
Developer friendliness. JavaScript and Python code steps, raw JSON visibility and an HTTP Request node for any API make n8n feel like a programmable tool rather than a recorder.
What we recommend
Inventory your processes first. For each one, note whether every system it touches has an API. In mid-sized companies, the large majority usually do, and those belong in n8n or a similar workflow tool.
Keep or adopt RPA only for the processes that genuinely depend on a screen. If you already own UiPath, there is no need to migrate working bots. Use our RPA vs AI agents page to decide which bots would benefit from an agent, and our RPA migration guide if you decide to move.
Lumeor builds n8n workflows and AI agents and integrates with existing RPA where clients have it. An n8n automation program typically runs $15,000–$50,000 for 5–15 workflows.
