Why it matters for your business
Voice agents can answer calls after hours, during peaks and in overflow, so fewer callers reach voicemail and staff spend less time on routine questions. They work best for structured calls such as scheduling, order status, intake and FAQs, and need a clear, fast handoff to a person for everything else. Practical concerns include latency, accents and background noise, call recording consent rules that vary by state, and disclosure. In 2024 the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under the TCPA, so outbound calls that use them generally need the recipient's prior express consent.
Example
A veterinary clinic sets up a voice AI agent to answer calls when the front desk is busy or closed. It books routine appointments in the practice management system, answers questions about hours and vaccination requirements, and takes refill requests for a vet to approve. Any mention of an emergency, such as a pet that ate something toxic, transfers the call to the on-call line.
