Blackbaud AI automation and integrations

The short answer

Blackbaud's NXT products, including Raiser's Edge NXT and Financial Edge NXT, can be automated through the SKY API, which needs a developer subscription key, an OAuth application and an administrator connecting that application to your environment. The most useful AI automations are donor research briefs, gift acknowledgment drafts, grant application drafting, data cleanup and board-ready fundraising summaries.

What you can automate with Blackbaud

Gift acknowledgment drafts

When a gift is recorded, draft a personal thank-you that references the fund, the donor's giving history and any tribute, for staff to review and send.

Donor research briefs

Before a meeting, summarize a constituent's giving, relationships, events attended and notes into a one-page brief for the major gifts officer.

Grant application drafting

Draft grant narratives from your program data, outcomes and past successful applications, matched to each funder's questions.

Online form and event sync

Move donations, registrations and volunteer sign-ups from forms and event tools into Raiser's Edge NXT with duplicate checks.

Constituent data cleanup

Find likely duplicate constituents, inconsistent addresses and missing fields, and propose merges and fixes for a data manager to approve.

Board fundraising summaries

Pull campaign totals, retention and pipeline from queries and write a short narrative for the monthly board packet.

What makes Blackbaud easy or hard to automate

Blackbaud’s NXT products sit behind the SKY API, which is documented, consistent across products and open to developers who sign up. Raiser’s Edge NXT exposes constituents, gifts, actions, notes, events, opportunities and lists. Financial Edge NXT exposes the general ledger and related accounting objects. Webhooks are available for some events, so a workflow can react to new gifts or constituent changes rather than polling.

Three things make it slower than a typical SaaS integration. First, every request needs both a subscription key and an OAuth token. Second, an environment administrator at the nonprofit has to connect the application to their Blackbaud environment, which means coordinating with whoever owns the database. Third, daily quotas apply, so a careless full sync can use up the day’s requests early.

Nonprofits also tend to have years of inconsistent data entry. Codes, appeals, funds and constituent records often need cleanup before automation produces trustworthy output.

The AI layer

Development teams are small and the writing load is large. AI helps most with:

  • Acknowledgments. Personal thank-you letters that mention the right fund, a tribute and the donor’s history, drafted the day the gift arrives.
  • Prospect briefs. A clear summary of a constituent’s relationship with your organization before a meeting, built from gifts, notes and actions.
  • Grant writing. Drafts that reuse your strongest past narratives and current outcomes, tailored to each funder’s questions.
  • Data quality. Spotting likely duplicates and inconsistent records that a data manager can approve in batches.

Nothing is sent to a donor without a person reading it, and gift amounts always come from Blackbaud, not from the model.

Limits to plan around

  • Quotas. Know your daily limit. Fetch changed records with date filters rather than full lists, and cache reference data such as funds and appeals.
  • Environment approval. Budget time for the nonprofit’s administrator to connect the app, and document which permissions it has.
  • Product differences. SKY API covers the NXT products. Raiser’s Edge 7, eTapestry and Blackbaud CRM each need their own approach.
  • Data hygiene. If gift coding is inconsistent, reports and AI summaries will be too. Fix the codes first.

How Lumeor typically connects it

We register a SKY application, have your administrator connect it, and run n8n workflows that call the SKY API with throttling and change-based queries. Writing tasks such as grant drafting and acknowledgments use a model with a staff review step in email or Teams. For event and form data we follow the pattern in our event registration guide. Many nonprofits start with a short AI readiness assessment to pick the first two workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Does Raiser's Edge NXT have an API?

Yes. Raiser's Edge NXT, Financial Edge NXT and several other Blackbaud products use the SKY API. You need a SKY developer account, a subscription key, and an OAuth application that an administrator in your organization connects to your Blackbaud environment.

Does the SKY API have usage limits?

Yes. Blackbaud applies rate limits and a daily request quota that depend on your SKY API subscription. Tiers and numbers change, so confirm yours with Blackbaud. Design syncs to fetch only changed records, and confirm your quota with Blackbaud before a large backfill.

Can I connect Blackbaud to n8n or Zapier?

n8n has no built-in Blackbaud node, so we use the HTTP Request node with an OAuth credential and the subscription key header. Some no-code and integration platforms list Raiser's Edge NXT connectors, so check whether one covers your workflow before building.

What about Raiser's Edge 7 or eTapestry?

They work differently. Raiser's Edge 7 is the older database product, and eTapestry has its own API. The SKY API approach on this page applies to the NXT products. If you are still on Raiser's Edge 7, automation usually relies on exports and imports.

Is it appropriate to use AI on donor data?

It can be, with care. Send only the fields a task needs, use providers that do not train on API data by default such as OpenAI and Anthropic, keep a person in the loop for anything sent to donors, and make sure your privacy policy covers how donor information is used.
