Google Cloud AI automation and integrations

The short answer

Google Cloud fits companies already on Google Workspace or BigQuery. Vertex AI gives managed access to Gemini and partner models under Google Cloud terms, Document AI reads forms and invoices, and BigQuery holds analytics data. n8n has built-in nodes for Vertex chat models, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Firestore and the Natural Language API. Common builds are document extraction, RAG over Drive and Cloud Storage, and natural-language reporting.

What you can automate with Google Cloud

Document extraction with Document AI

Parse invoices, receipts and forms with a Document AI processor and a Gemini model, validate fields in code and route exceptions.

RAG over Drive and Cloud Storage

Index documents from Google Drive or a storage bucket and answer staff questions with citations, respecting sharing permissions.

Plain-English questions over BigQuery

Answer business questions with SQL generated against approved BigQuery views, with cost limits on every query.

Feedback and review analysis

Classify reviews, tickets and survey comments by theme and sentiment using the Natural Language API or a Gemini model.

Alert and log digests

Summarize Cloud Logging errors and monitoring alerts into a short daily digest grouped by likely cause.

Governed LLM access to internal data

Run narrow tool functions on Cloud Run that an AI agent can call, with IAM deciding what each function can read.

What makes Google Cloud easy or hard to automate

Google Cloud is API-first, and for companies on Google Workspace it shares identity with the tools people already use. Service accounts give automations their own identity, Pub/Sub and Eventarc turn changes into events, and serverless services such as Cloud Run and Cloud Functions host custom steps without servers to manage. n8n covers the most used services with built-in nodes.

The friction is configuration. Each API must be enabled per project, IAM roles have to be chosen carefully, and organization policies may block service account key creation entirely. That last one is good security practice, but it means external tools need a planned approach to credentials, such as running n8n on Google Cloud with an attached service account.

The AI layer

Google Cloud’s AI services cover most needs for a small or mid-sized company:

  • Vertex AI for Gemini and partner models, including Claude, with grounding, retrieval and agent tooling.
  • Document AI for structured extraction from invoices, receipts, IDs and custom forms.
  • BigQuery for analytics data, with in-database AI functions and vector search.
  • Natural Language API for classic entity and sentiment analysis when a full LLM is more than the job needs.

The common pattern is files in Drive or Cloud Storage, extraction with Document AI or a Gemini model, structured results in BigQuery or a database, and n8n or Cloud Run for the workflow logic.

Limits to plan around

  • Service account keys. Prefer attached service accounts and workload identity. If you must use a key in an external tool, scope it tightly and rotate it.
  • Quotas. Vertex AI and Document AI have per-project, per-region quotas. Request increases before large batch jobs.
  • Region and model availability. Not every model is available in every region. Pick a region that has what you need and meets residency requirements.
  • Workspace permissions. Indexing Drive content requires either user OAuth or domain-wide delegation, which a Workspace admin must approve.
  • Budget alerts. Set budgets and alerts per project before scaling usage.

How Lumeor typically connects it

For Google-centric clients we run n8n on Google Cloud or connect it with a dedicated service account, use Vertex AI or a direct model provider for reasoning, and keep data in BigQuery and Cloud Storage. Document extraction and RAG over Drive are frequent first projects. If you are weighing open models on your own infrastructure against hosted APIs, see open-source LLMs vs API models.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vertex AI?

Vertex AI is Google Cloud's platform for using and managing AI models. As of 2026, Google presents its services as part of Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, though many docs and tools, including n8n's node, still say Vertex AI. It provides Google's Gemini models and a catalog of partner and open models, including Anthropic's Claude models, along with tools for retrieval, agents and evaluation, all under Google Cloud billing and IAM.

Should we use Gemini through Vertex AI or the Gemini API?

Use Vertex AI for production business workloads where you want Google Cloud IAM, project-level billing, regional controls and your existing Google Cloud agreements. The Gemini API through Google AI Studio is quicker for prototypes. Check each service's current data terms for your use case.

Does n8n work with Google Cloud?

Yes. n8n has built-in nodes for Vertex AI chat models, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Firestore, Realtime Database and the Natural Language API, plus the Workspace apps. Other Google Cloud APIs can be called through the HTTP Request node with a Google service account credential.

Can an AI assistant respect Google Drive sharing permissions?

Yes, if you build it to. Store each document's allowed users and groups as metadata when indexing, and filter retrieval by the asking user's identity. An assistant that indexes everything with one service account and filters nothing will show people documents they could not open.
