What makes Gorgias easy to automate
Gorgias is designed around ecommerce data. Tickets come with the Shopify (or BigCommerce or Adobe Commerce) customer and order history attached, and Gorgias’s own rules and macros can already tag tickets and insert order details. A lot of “automation” for a store is configuration inside Gorgias, not a separate workflow.
When you do need an external workflow, the REST API covers tickets, messages, customers, tags, users and macros. Outbound events come through HTTP integrations, which fire a request on ticket created, ticket updated or message created. Zapier and Make both have Gorgias apps for simpler jobs. In n8n we use the HTTP Request node, since there is no built-in Gorgias node.
The AI layer, and where the Gorgias AI Agent fits
Gorgias sells an AI Agent that handles common ecommerce questions and can take actions in Shopify such as order lookups, cancellations and returns, billed per automated interaction. For a typical Shopify brand, that is the fastest path to resolving “where is my order” and “can I change my address” without custom work. Turn it on, review a few hundred conversations and see where it hands off.
Custom AI earns its place in the gaps:
- Data outside Shopify. 3PL portals, warehouse systems, ERPs, custom subscription logic or B2B pricing are invisible to the AI Agent unless someone builds the bridge.
- Policy edge cases. Final-sale items, bundles, partial refunds and international returns often need logic written in code, with a model only used to read the request.
- Merchandising insight. Product-level complaint analysis is valuable to buyers and rarely done because it means reading every ticket.
Our Shopify order exception guide shows the pattern for the most common custom build, and our Shopify AI copilot case study shows the kind of store-side AI work we do.
Limits to plan around
- Shared per-account rate limits. Gorgias uses a leaky bucket per account. Helpdesk apps, review apps and your own workflow all draw from it.
- Billing interactions. Automated replies and AI Agent messages affect how tickets and interactions are counted for billing. Check how your plan counts tickets before automating high-volume replies.
- Event loops. An HTTP integration on “ticket updated” will fire when your workflow updates the ticket. Filter on a tag or the updating user.
- Rules order. Gorgias rules can close, tag or auto-reply before your workflow sees the ticket. Map the existing rules first.
- Shopify as source of truth. Make sure refunds and cancellations are executed in Shopify (or through Gorgias’s Shopify actions), not just recorded in a ticket.
How Lumeor typically connects it
For Shopify brands we usually leave the Gorgias AI Agent on for simple order questions and build an n8n workflow for the exceptions. A Gorgias HTTP integration posts new tickets to n8n, which classifies the request, checks Shopify and the 3PL or carrier, applies the policy in code and writes back a tag, an internal note and a suggested macro. Agents approve the action in one click.
We also sync tickets nightly into a warehouse table so merchandising can query complaints by SKU. A single exception workflow typically falls in our workflow automation band. Book a call to scope yours.
