What is Fractional AI Officer?

Definition

A fractional AI officer is an experienced AI leader who works part-time for a company, often on a monthly retainer, to set AI strategy, prioritize projects, choose vendors, oversee implementation and establish governance. The role gives a smaller organization senior AI leadership without the cost of a full-time executive hire, similar to a fractional CFO or CTO.

Why it matters for your business

Many small and mid-sized companies need someone accountable for AI decisions but cannot justify, or easily find, a full-time executive. A fractional AI officer can turn scattered experiments into a roadmap, review vendor proposals, prevent duplicate tool spending, set usage policy and track whether projects deliver. The arrangement works best with a clear scope, an internal sponsor with authority and defined deliverables each quarter. It is less suitable when a company mainly needs a large hands-on build team, which a part-time leader cannot replace.

Example

A 150-person logistics company engages a fractional AI officer for two days a month. In the first quarter, the officer inventories AI tools already in use, writes an acceptable use policy, ranks automation opportunities and manages a proof of concept for freight quote extraction. Later quarters focus on rolling out the successful projects and tracking results.
