What you can automate with MyCase
Lead intake and qualification Read web and email inquiries, extract practice area, parties and urgency, draft a reply and create the lead for intake staff to review.
Read the build guide Time entry drafts Build draft time entries from calendar events, emails and documents worked on, with narratives attorneys edit before billing.
Read the build guide Client document collection Track which documents each client still owes, send friendly reminders through the client portal or email, and check uploads for completeness.
Invoice reminders Pull overdue invoices and draft reminders that reference the matter, for the billing team to approve and send.
Read the build guide Case update summaries Summarize recent case activity, notes and deadlines into a short weekly update for the responsible attorney or the client.
Read the build guide Engagement letter generation Fill the firm's engagement letter template from intake data and send it for e-signature once an attorney approves it.
What makes MyCase easy or hard to automate
MyCase’s Open API is a conventional OAuth 2.0 REST API over cases, contacts, leads, events, tasks, time entries, documents and invoices. Each call acts as a MyCase user, so the integration sees exactly what that user can see. That is a useful safety property: authorize with a dedicated user whose access matches the job.
Two things make it harder than Clio. First, the Open API is tied to the Advanced tier at the time of writing, so a firm on a lower plan has to upgrade or stay within Zapier and native integrations. Second, MyCase does not support custom implementations directly. You request credentials through support, then build with your own developer or a consultant. Neither is a blocker, but both belong in the plan and the budget conversation.
The AI layer
MyCase manages the case. AI handles the reading and writing around it:
- Intake, turning an inquiry into a structured lead with practice area, parties for a conflict check and a suggested next step.
- Time capture, drafting entries from the day’s work so less billable time slips.
- Client communication, such as document requests, invoice reminders and case updates written in the firm’s voice.
- Summaries of long notes and documents for an attorney picking up a file.
Drafts only. Attorneys review anything that goes to a client or into a bill.
Limits to plan around
- Client confidentiality. Know which vendors see client data and on what terms, minimize what each step receives, and document your choices. Check your jurisdiction’s ethics guidance.
- Plan tier. API access depends on your MyCase plan. Confirm before committing.
- User-scoped access. The authorizing user’s permissions decide what the integration can read and write. Use a dedicated integration user.
- Trust funds. Keep automation out of trust account transactions entirely.
How Lumeor typically connects it
Once a firm has API credentials, we run n8n with an OAuth credential for MyCase, an LLM step for intake or drafting, and attorney review in email or Teams before anything is written back or sent. For firms not on the Advanced tier, we start with Zapier and form or email triggers, then move up when it pays off; our n8n vs Zapier comparison covers that decision. The law firm intake guide is the usual first build, and the Clio page covers the main alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Which MyCase plan includes the API?
As of 2026, MyCase's pricing page lists the Open API as a feature of the Advanced plan. Plans and packaging change, so confirm with MyCase before you scope a project. If you are on a lower tier, Zapier and MyCase's native integrations may cover simpler needs.
How do we get MyCase API credentials?
Review MyCase's API documentation, then contact MyCase support to request access for your firm. You receive OAuth client credentials. Expect to build with your own developer or one of MyCase's certified consultants rather than with MyCase itself, and confirm the current request process with MyCase support.
Can AI read our MyCase case files without breaching confidentiality?
It can be set up responsibly. Lawyers must protect client confidences and understand the tools they use, and ABA and state bar guidance on generative AI addresses this. Use vendors with clear data terms (OpenAI and Anthropic do not train on API data by default), limit the data each step sees, and log access. This is not legal advice.
Is Zapier enough for MyCase automation?
For simple handoffs, often yes, such as pushing web form inquiries into MyCase or posting new items to a team channel. Check Zapier's current MyCase triggers and actions against your workflow. Once you need AI steps, conditional logic or volume, n8n or custom code against the Open API is usually cheaper and easier to maintain.
