The short version
ChatGPT and Claude are both strong, safe choices for a company assistant. The differences are in emphasis. ChatGPT tries to be the one app for everything: text, images, voice, research, custom GPTs and shared agents. Claude concentrates on reading, writing, reasoning and code, and does those very well, especially with long inputs.
Both vendors offer business tiers with SSO, admin controls and a default of not training on your data. So the decision is rarely about security. It is about which tool your people will get more done with.
Where ChatGPT wins
Breadth. Image generation, voice conversations, deep research and file analysis live in one interface. Claude also offers voice mode and Research, but it does not generate images natively, which matters to marketing and design teams. A marketing team, a sales team and an operations team can all find daily uses in ChatGPT without extra tools.
Familiarity. Most employees have used ChatGPT personally. Adoption is faster when people already know the interface, and training time drops.
Shareable building blocks. Custom GPTs and workspace agents let a team package a prompt, files and tools into something colleagues can reuse. That is a practical way to spread good practice without a development project.
Regional data residency. OpenAI lists data residency in several regions for eligible enterprise customers, which helps companies with non-US requirements.
Where Claude wins
Long documents. Current Claude models support very large context windows, up to 1M tokens depending on the model. Feeding in a full contract set, a policy manual or a year of board minutes and asking precise questions is where Claude often feels strongest. Our AI contract review guide shows how that capability is used in practice.
Writing and analysis. Many teams prefer Claude’s drafts for client-facing writing and its handling of nuanced instructions. That is a judgment call, so test it with your own documents rather than taking anyone’s word for it.
Coding. Claude Code is included in Claude’s paid plans. If developers are part of the rollout, that can remove a separate tool purchase.
Connecting internal tools. Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol, and Claude’s connectors work with MCP servers, which gives admins a standard way to expose internal systems with permissions.
How to run a fair pilot
Pick 10 to 20 real tasks from three or four roles: a contract summary, a customer email, a spreadsheet question, a policy lookup, a sales account brief. Run each task in both tools with the same files and instructions. Have the people who do that work score the results. Two weeks is usually enough to see a clear preference by role.
Also check the admin side: SSO setup, which connectors you will allow, retention settings, and how usage-based charges are capped. Our AI training workshops often run alongside a pilot so the comparison reflects good usage rather than first attempts.
What we recommend
Standardize on one assistant for the whole company so policies, training and connectors stay simple. Choose ChatGPT if breadth and familiarity matter most. Choose Claude if your work is document-heavy or developer-heavy. Add a small number of seats on the other tool where a team has a specific reason.
Keep the chat subscription decision separate from your automation stack. Lumeor builds agents and automations on both the OpenAI and Claude APIs, as covered in OpenAI API vs Claude API for agents, and the right model for an automation is not always the one your staff chat with.
