Comparison

Microsoft 365 Copilot vs ChatGPT Enterprise

The verdict

Microsoft 365 Copilot is the better fit when your work lives in Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and SharePoint, because it works inside those apps and draws on your Microsoft 365 data with existing permissions. ChatGPT Enterprise is the better fit when you want a strong standalone assistant that works across mixed tools, including Google Workspace, with custom GPTs and agents. Many Microsoft shops give everyone Copilot Chat and add ChatGPT Enterprise seats for power users.

Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot if

  • Your company runs on Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive
  • The biggest wins are in email, meetings and documents people already work in
  • IT wants AI governed by the same Purview, retention and eDiscovery tooling as everything else
  • You plan to build agents in Copilot Studio alongside Power Automate

Choose ChatGPT Enterprise if

  • Your company uses Google Workspace or a mix of tools
  • People need a general-purpose assistant for research, analysis, writing and images
  • Teams want to build and share custom GPTs and agents without a development project
  • You want one assistant whether or not a task touches Microsoft 365 data

The short version

Microsoft now sells Microsoft 365 Copilot under the name Microsoft Copilot, and Copilot Chat as Microsoft Copilot Chat. This page uses the older name because many buyers still search for it.

These two products answer different questions. Microsoft 365 Copilot asks, “How can AI help inside the apps where your work already happens?” ChatGPT Enterprise asks, “What is the most capable general assistant we can give every employee?”

If your company lives in Outlook, Teams and SharePoint, Copilot’s ability to summarize a meeting you missed, draft a reply from an email thread or pull figures from files you have access to is hard to replicate. If your tools are mixed, or the main need is research, analysis and writing, ChatGPT Enterprise is often the stronger daily assistant.

Where Microsoft 365 Copilot wins

It works where people already are. Copilot appears in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. There is no new app to adopt, and the context of the current document, thread or meeting comes along automatically.

Grounding in Microsoft 365 data. Copilot uses Microsoft Graph to draw on email, chats, documents and meetings the user can access. Questions like “what did we agree with this client last month” can be answered from real records.

Governance in one place. Prompts and responses stay within the Microsoft 365 service boundary under Microsoft’s enterprise data protection, are not used to train the underlying models, and follow your retention and eDiscovery policies. For IT and compliance teams already invested in Microsoft Purview, that is a strong argument.

Agents next to Power Automate. Copilot Studio lets you build custom agents that connect to the same Power Platform tools many Microsoft shops already use. Our Zapier vs Power Automate page covers that side of the stack.

Where ChatGPT Enterprise wins

A stronger standalone assistant. For open-ended research, analysis, writing and image work, ChatGPT is a focused, capable tool that many employees already know.

Works with any stack. Company knowledge connectors reach SharePoint, Google Drive and other apps, so it fits companies on Google Workspace or a mix of systems.

Shareable GPTs and agents. Teams can package instructions, files and tools into custom GPTs or workspace agents and share them without IT building anything.

Enterprise controls. SSO, SCIM, role-based access, a Compliance API, custom retention and data residency options cover most security reviews. Business data is not used for training by default.

What we recommend

Start from where your people spend their day. For a Microsoft 365 company, pilot full Copilot with a group that lives in Outlook and Teams, such as account managers or operations leads, and measure time saved on meetings, email and document drafting. Fix oversharing in SharePoint before you expand. Our AI readiness assessment covers permissions, data and use-case priorities in one pass.

For a mixed or Google-based company, ChatGPT Enterprise is usually the simpler standard. Also compare it with Claude, as covered in Claude Enterprise vs ChatGPT Enterprise.

Either way, licenses alone rarely change how people work. Budget for training and a handful of well-defined use cases per team. Our AI training workshops are built for exactly that rollout step.

Frequently asked questions

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot the same as ChatGPT?

No. Copilot uses OpenAI's GPT models among others, but it is a Microsoft product built into Microsoft 365 apps and grounded in your Microsoft 365 data. ChatGPT Enterprise is OpenAI's own standalone assistant. They share some underlying technology but differ in where they run, what data they see and how they are licensed.

Do I need a separate license for Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Yes, for the full product. Microsoft sells it as an add-on that requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, with a Copilot Business option for Microsoft 365 business plans. A basic Copilot Chat experience is available to eligible Microsoft 365 users at no extra cost, but it does not draw on your work data in the same way. Check Microsoft's current licensing terms.

What should we fix before rolling out Copilot?

Sharing permissions. Copilot can surface any file a user already has access to, so overshared SharePoint sites and Teams files become easy to find. Review sensitive sites, sharing links and sensitivity labels first. An AI readiness assessment usually covers this.

Can we use both?

Yes, and it is common. Many Microsoft-based companies give everyone Copilot Chat, license full Copilot for roles that live in Outlook and Teams, and give a smaller group ChatGPT Enterprise for research and analysis. Keep data policies consistent across both.
