What you can automate with ADP
New hire hand-off from your ATS When a candidate is hired, prepare ADP onboarding data from the offer and send HR a checklist to confirm before it is entered.
Read the build guide Offboarding coordination On termination, remove system access, collect equipment and notify payroll and benefits contacts, with every step logged.
Read the build guide Timesheet exception review Flag missing punches, unapproved overtime and unusual hours before the payroll cutoff and route them to the right manager.
Read the build guide Pre-payroll variance check Compare this period's payroll register to prior periods and explain the differences for the approver in plain English.
Read the build guide HR policy assistant Answer employee questions about pay dates, leave and benefits from your handbook so HR is not the first line of support.
Read the build guide Account provisioning from ADP Create and remove accounts in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace from ADP worker status, department and job title.

ADP serves companies of every size through different products, such as RUN for small businesses and Workforce Now for mid-sized companies, and their APIs differ. The APIs themselves cover workers, payroll inputs, time and attendance, and more, but access is the bottleneck. Customers typically purchase an API access option such as API Central, software vendors must be certified through the ADP Marketplace, and every connection requires OAuth client credentials plus a client certificate for mutual TLS.
None of that makes ADP a bad automation target. It makes the start slower. We put API access on the project plan as its own step, with ADP’s timelines, before promising a launch date.
The AI layer
Payroll accuracy matters more than speed, so AI stays in review and support roles:
- Catching problems before cutoff. Reading timesheets and payroll changes and explaining anything unusual to the approver.
- Hand-offs. Turning an offer letter and ATS record into clean onboarding data for HR to confirm. We cover the hand-off in how to automate employee onboarding.
- Employee questions. An HR policy assistant that answers from your documents, so HR handles exceptions rather than routine questions.
Pay rates, tax elections and bank details are never changed by a model.
Limits to plan around
- Access approval. Budget weeks for API access, credential issuance and any certification. This is usually the longest lead time in the project.
- Certificates. The mutual TLS certificate and private key must be stored securely, and certificates expire. Set a renewal reminder.
- Product differences. RUN, Workforce Now and other ADP products expose different data. Confirm your product’s coverage before scoping.
- Data sensitivity. Payroll and identity data need least-privilege access, encryption and access logs.
- Fallback path. If API access is not possible, scheduled report exports still support many automations.
How Lumeor typically connects it
We confirm the client’s ADP product and API options first. Where API access is available, we connect self-hosted n8n through HTTP Request nodes configured with the client certificate, and run approvals in Microsoft Teams or Slack. Where it is not, we automate from scheduled ADP report exports and keep ADP as the system people update by hand. An AI readiness assessment is a good way to sort which HR processes are worth automating before you pay for API access.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get API access to ADP?
For your own company, ask your ADP representative about API Central or the API access option for your product. ADP sells API Central as a purchasable option, and which ADP products it covers varies, so confirm yours. Software vendors serving many ADP clients join the ADP Marketplace partner program and go through certification. Either way, expect approval and credential setup to add weeks to a project.
Can I automate ADP without the API?
Partly. Many teams start with scheduled report exports from ADP to a secure folder, then automate everything downstream, such as approvals, summaries and provisioning. It is less real-time, but it avoids the API approval process and is often enough for reporting.
Does n8n or Zapier connect to ADP?
n8n has no built-in ADP node. Once you have API credentials and a client certificate, the HTTP Request node can call ADP's APIs, though certificate handling needs careful setup. Check Zapier's and Make's directories for current ADP coverage, which tends to be limited and still depends on your ADP API access.
How do we keep ADP payroll data safe in AI workflows?
Scope credentials to the data each workflow needs, keep the client certificate and secret in a secure credential store, and avoid sending pay, tax or bank data to a model unless a use case requires it. Self-hosted n8n keeps the data path inside your environment.
